What is the principle of a heat exchanger?

A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer heat energy from one fluid to another to achieve a temperature change or thermal energy balance. The principle of a heat exchanger is based on three methods: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Heat conduction refers to the transfer of heat by the movement of molecules within a substance. In a heat exchanger, heat energy is transferred from one fluid to another by conduction. Inside the heat exchanger there are usually tubes or sheets made of metal or other heat-conducting materials, which allow heat energy to be transferred through the material. The heat transfer efficiency can be improved by increasing the contact area and reducing the heat transfer distance.

Convection refers to the heat transfer and flow of molecules in a fluid. In a heat exchanger, the fluid circulates through pipes or channels within the device, and heat energy is also transferred as the fluid flows. Convection heat transfer depends on factors such as the velocity of the fluid, flow characteristics (such as viscosity and density), the temperature difference between the fluid and the heat exchange surface, and the design of the pipe.

Radiation refers to the transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves in the absence of a medium. The tube wall of a heat exchanger can directly transfer heat energy to other fluids through radiation heat transfer. The higher the temperature of an object, the more obvious the radiation heat transfer.

The heat exchanger uses three methods, heat conduction, convection and radiation, to effectively transfer heat from one fluid to another, meeting the needs of heat energy conversion and balance in industries, construction, transportation and other fields.
